Music Monday - March Playlist

Music has always been a huge part of my life.
I've always prided myself on being open to various genres (though I remain most partial to a select few) and discovering new artists to turn my friends onto. I have managed the music feature for the site that employs me for some time, allowing me to meet a wealth of talented artists over the years.
Oh. And I'm marrying a musician. If that doesn't seal the deal, I recently discovered the wonder that is the Grooveshark playlist, that allows you to build, customize and embed your recent musical discoveries for all the Internet to enjoy.

So. Here's my top picks for March tracks. I elaborate on the titles after the jump, including some favorite lyrics, which I spend much time learning and enjoying--perhaps that's the ever-present poet in me. Many of these tunes are not new, but perhaps new to me, and have found themselves on repeat as of late. As the winter (hopefully) winds down, there's still some moody, slow stuff thrown in, but a few uppity optimistic tunes as well. I recommend blasting while in your kitchen cooking up a storm. Spoon-microphone singing optional required.

NB Song Swoon - March 2013 by allison beauchesne on Grooveshark

1. Blind Pilot - We Are the Tide
I have loved Blind Pilot for a while. Ever since I heard Three Rounds and a Sound in an episode of Californication and replayed the scene and Shazam-ed the song and then listened to it over and over and over again until I knew every word.
I have done the same thing with We Are the Tide. It makes me want to dance. Or drink. Or maybe go for a jog. Not necessarily in that order.

2. Sam Palladio & Clare Bowen - I Will Fall
So Nashville has become my guilty pleasure. I watch it on Hulu when Matty isn't home. While I am usually adamantly anti-country music, the characters played by these two-- songwriting partners turned lovers Gunnar and Scarlet-- are much more folk-sy than their on-screen counterparts. This song has been on repeat for weeks for me.

Wish you the best, I'm headed west, it's all I know to do...

3. Coconut Records - West Coast
This song is actually from 2007, which I wish I had known back when I was dating someone who, you know, lived on the West Coast--but whatever. Better late than never. This song reminds me of rainy spring afternoons and missing Matty--which now seems like so long ago. This song does the impossible; it makes me nostalgic for a shittier time in my life.

4. Vampire Weekend - I'm Going Down
This was in the closing scene of the season premier of Girls. I had barely heard Ezra's very distinct voice before I knew it was Vampire Weekend, and it was a new track. I immediately found and purchased their iTunes Session album as I wait with baited breath for their third record to be released (which I am getting on WHITE VINYL because my fiancé rules). I am a huge Vampire Weekend fan, and this song is, as per usual with them, so darn catchy,

5. The Lumineers - Stubborn Love
I was on the "Ho! Hey!" bandwagon the very first time I saw that Bing Hawaii commercial, and was so pleased when I purchased the full length debut album from these guys only to realize each track is better than the last. This song in particular has been getting some heavy rotation lately (including a performance on SNL)--it seems like a somewhat appropriate winter anthem to me.
When we were young, oh oh we did enough. When it got cold, ooh ooh we bundled up. I can't be told it can't be done. So keep your head up, my love.

6. GIVERS - Up Up Up
This song has been my go-to at the gym. You can't help but tap your foot.

7. The Head and the Heart - Cats and Dogs
One of my Tumblr buddies posted this a while back. I became obsessed with the track immediately. I love the melody and progression of this song. The rest of this band's offerings are also as delightfully enjoyable.
My roots have grown, but I don't know where they are.

8. Tim McMorris - Overwhelmed
I get a lot of my new favorite songs from commercials-- this track that is the soundtrack to the latest Sam Adams "For the Love of Beer" campaign is a great one--and even sweeter when you realize he's singing about a girl and not a brewery. Although I am overwhelmed by beer sometimes, too
