Local Love: District Pub

For the past year, Matt and I have been calling North Hollywood our home. Our own little corner of this sprawling metropolis we moved to, NoHo seemed to be the perfect fit: reasonably priced rent (with outdoor space!), plenty of spots to drink, and (I hoped) good places to eat as well.

Of course, my wishes came true, and shortly after moving right near an illustrious In & Out Burger (which is the only fast food I have eaten, or will eat, in decades. Seriously), we started to realize our neighborhood had a lot to offer. So much more than when Matt called it home eight years ago, and it seemed like a new place was popping up every day.

One place that had just opened its doors for the first time right around then was the District Pub. Our first venture was, I believe, two days after they opened, and we have become quite the regulars since. It's a great example of a simple concept done superbly well-- a large craft beer list, house-made sausages, and burgers. That's about it. There's also a huge, delicious, chewy pretzel if you're into that sorta thing. And really, really good French fries. But otherwise?

Go for the beer.
Stay for the meat.
Repeat.

We usually opt for a sampler platter of three sausages-- these come sans bun, which Matty can't have, anyway, so it's fine by us. This gives us a great chance to try a new, special sausage, or just go to town on three of our favorites-- which are probably the Krainer (it's pork/beef and ONE QUARTER French cheese. Yes. 25%. Get it), the spicy Italian, and the Duck. Honorary mention to Hungarian Kolbasa and Cheddarwurs-- those are up there, too. They also offer you some delightful topping options like sauerkraut, carmelized onions, or grilled jalapeños, and great house-made dipping sauces like horseradish crème (Matt's pick) or tomatillo habanero relish (mine, obviously!).

Sometimes, though, Matt will feel like the only way to compensate for his wheat allergy is with, you guessed it, more protein. He'll get the Big Boy Protein Style, which is basically a cheeseburger with an Andouille sausage on top. A nice light meal, if you will. He also highly recommends the Early Bird in either sausage or burger form, which, of course, features a fried egg on top.

Sometimes, we'll start with a side of regular or sweet potato fries, with homemade ranch and spicy ketchup to dip. These are a great addition to your meal, but also totally not necessary before you dive into three massive sausages. And wash it all down with beer.

Speaking of beer, they have about 20 beers on tap at any given time. I find their few-and-far-between sweet/mild offerings, like Anthem Cherry Cider, Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen, and Trumer Pilsner, while Matt is in hop-infused bonerville. They usually have upwards of five IPAs on draft, including his most recent favorite from Angel City, the Angelino. Their happy hour runs from 2-7, every goddamn day!, and gives you $2 bucks off a draft and a dollar off a bottled beer of your choice.

The staff includes some of our favorite people we've met in our 'hood, and we've never had a bad experience in this place. We usually sit at the bar in the back, but sometimes we'll grab a patio seat (especially if furry creatures are with us) and enjoy some quality people-watching on Lankershim.
