Somewhat recently, I wrote about my friend and his sisters who were in the process of opening of food truck, and the delicious food we had at their pop-up dinner. Well, since that time, Mei Mei Street Kitchen has hit the streets and is proudly serving up their dumplings in Back Bay all week.
And while I must always recommend a friend first, I also wanted to set the scene and remind you that I have quite the propensity for food trucks. Also, when you have been employed on the same street for about four years, you get very excited when new culinary offerings literally roll into your life.
In the years that I have been working in downtown, the number of food trucks in and around Boston continues to grow, and in the past 6-or-so months, the bright yellow blue Bon Me truck has been a welcome addition to my lunchtime routine.
The menu is easy to navigate, which I enjoy and am sure makes the line move quicker (and it does. I have been the twentieth in line and still back at my desk 20 minutes later). Pick your item; either a baguette (styled similar to a traditional bahn mi), a noodle salad or a rice bowl. From there, pick a meat or vegetarian protein (at least three options, rotating), and then further customize your pick: white or brown rice, soba or rice noodles, salad dressing, extra (extra, extra) jalapenos (if you're me), a side of edamame, etc.
I usually to opt for a Noodle Salad with whatever filling I am in the mood for; today it was the cilantro peppercorn chicken with soba noodles (which was pretty good). If there is any sort of pulled pork option on the menu I would always recommend that. Rice noodles over soba. Vietnamese vinaigrette over other dressings (miso lime, a close second). Of course, this is just preference, as I have never disliked anything that has come out of this truck's blue window.
The sandwiches, which are not to be missed when you're hungover (and at work. On a Monday. What?), are also delicious, brimming with meat and well worth the $6. In the winter, they had a noodle soup which I pray makes a return this year. It is the kind of thing I tried to replicate at home (and came close, but not the same).
It is also worth noting that their drinks (especially Thai Basil Limeade and Spicy Ginger Lemonade) are above par and compliment the Bon Me food accordingly. If you need any further convincing, they take cash, credit cards via Square, and (my favorite) LevelUp, which makes paying fast and easy (and kind of fun with the light-up-kiosk thing? Just me?).
Be sure to pay Bon Me a visit next time you're on the greenway, and keep an eye out for all the various food trucks that are hitting the (narrow) Boston streets this spring and summer!
